Miami tops U.S. luxury real estate market with most expensive home sales

South Florida rules the U.S. luxury real estate market — and a new report further cements our reputation as a billionaire's playground. The Miami metro area claimed the top three most expensive home sales in the U.S. last month, according to the brokerage Redfin. Why it matters: Despite the growing threats of climate change, natural disasters and rising insurance costs, South Florida remains a magnet for the wealthy, Redfin found. Zoom in: The nation's most expensive home sale in February was a $49 million estate in Manalapan, the wealthy village south of Palm Beach. Sticker shock: The most expensive listing in the U.S. today, as of last week, is a $285 million compound fronting the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway, also in Manalapan. The yet-to-be-constructed project will include an eight-bedroom main house on the Intracoastal and a smaller beach house connected by a tunnel crossing South Ocean Boulevard, per the Palm Beach Daily News. The four-acre compound — next door to a property owned by billionaire Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison — will include a private dock, shooting range and private car museum, per the listing. By the numbers: Palm Beach County claimed four of February's most expensive U.S. sales, locking out the top three spots with a $48 million Jupiter mansion and a $40 million Palm Beach estate on Billionaires Row. Miami Beach's North Beach neighborhood came in at No. 5 with a $35.6 million beachfront abode in Altos del Mar and No. 10 with these Allison Island digs worth $31 million.
